How To Care For Your Precious Pearls

How To Care For Your Precious Pearls

Perhaps the best-loved gems of all time, pearls unlike any other gem, are produced by a living creature. Delicate as they appear to be, they should last forever if you follow these simple rules.

According to Coco Chanel “women should have ropes and ropes of pearls”, our top tip is to wear them often as the skin's natural oils give them a special lustre.

Store pearls separately from diamonds that could scratch the surface of the pearl. A good idea is to fasten all pins or catches to prevent them getting tangled, store them in a cloth bag and tuck them safely away in a separate compartment in your jewellery box.

Pearls are organic gemstones that are vulnerable to acid, alkaline and extremes of humidity. Never ever, spray perfume, deodorant or hairspray directly onto pearls. These can all erode the outer layers. I spray perfume onto my clothes, rather than my skin, when I wear mine. And just in case any corrosive substances, including perspiration and make up have come into contact with your precious pearls, develop the habit of wiping them off with a soft cloth before putting them away.

In the case of pearl necklaces, avoid getting them wet as this may damage the string. Every few years take them to a jeweller to check if they need re-stringing. It is a small investment that will save you from the embarrassment of scrambling around on all fours retrieving the bouncing orbs from underneath people's feet, behind the couch or inevitably loosing some forever.
