A Lab Grown Diamond has the same properties as a Natural Diamond. The only difference is how they are formed, their origin. Lab Grown Diamonds have seen a rapid increase in popularity within recent years. Young diamond-buyers are drawn to them because of their price, transparency and the lower impact they have on the environment and on people working to produce them.

Lab Grown Diamonds offer the buyer a diamond that is chemically and physically the same as a Natural Diamond along with variations in Colour and Clarity, making each Lab Grown Diamond unique. Rather than forming in the depths of the Earth, a Lab- Grown Diamond is created in the controlled environment of a laboratory.
They are created using extreme pressure and heat inside a machine rather than deep inside the Earth. There are two ways to grow a diamond. Both involve starting with a microscopic diamond seed.
High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) system
The first lab diamond was made using a High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) system, where the seed is then placed with pure graphite carbon and exposed to temperatures of about 1,500C and pressurised to approximately 1.5 million pounds per square inch in a chamber. Carbon atoms attach to the seed, causing it to grow, very slowly, over a period of several weeks.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
More recently, another way to grow a diamond was discovered, called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). This involves putting the seed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas and heating to around 800C. Under these conditions the gases begin to “stick” to the seed, growing a diamond carbon atom by atom. This process creates larger Carat Weight Rough Diamonds between three weeks and a month, it is then sent for cutting.
ARE THEY CERTIFIED?
Once a Lab-Grown Diamond is cut, its colour, clarity and carat weight are revealed and the independent certification process, as with Natural Diamonds can take place. Our Lab- Grown Diamonds of more than 0.50 carat are certified by an independent organisation such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and HRD Antwerp as with our Natural Diamonds. Thanks to the short and transparent supply chain, Lab- Grown Diamonds are priced lower than Natural Diamonds by up to 40% less.

There has been increasing competition between Lab Grown Diamond and Natural Diamond companies. Both processes are high energy and create a large carbon footprint. Some Laboratories off set their carbon footprint becoming carbon neutral.
Obviously the process of Natural Diamond mining is visually, socially and environmentally impactful on the Earth, with an estimated 250 tonnes of earth shifted for every single carat of diamond during the mining process.
